Gill Anchors India’s Total Amidst Middle-Over Jitters

Opting to bat first, India posted a competitive total of 167/8 on a surface that offered assistance to both pacers and spinners. The innings was anchored by opener Shubman Gill, who played the longest knock, scoring a composed 46 off 39 balls. Gill, along with a free-flowing Abhishek Sharma (28 off 21), laid a solid foundation with a 56-run opening partnership.

However, the middle phase saw a characteristic Indian collapse, spearheaded by the Australian spinners. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who looked dangerous with a quick-fire 20 off 10 balls including two sixes, fell trying to maintain the aggressive tempo. The introduction of Adam Zampa (3/45) and the brilliant variations of Nathan Ellis (3/21) triggered a flurry of wickets, as India lost their way between the 10th and 18th overs.

Crucially, Axar Patel (21 off 11)* provided the much-needed late flourish, hitting a six and a four to push the total past the psychological 165-mark, ensuring the bowlers had a fighting chance.

Spinners Choke Australian Chase

Defending 167, India’s bowlers executed their plans to perfection, strangling the Australian chase right from the powerplay. The home side’s batting order, featuring prominent T20 names, struggled to adapt to the disciplined line and length, eventually being bowled out for just 119 in 18.2 overs.

The Indian spinners, in particular, were the architects of the collapse. Axar Patel (2/20) continued his stellar form, removing the dangerous Matthew Short early and later cleaning up Josh Inglis. Varun Chakaravarthy (1/26) was equally economical and bagged the key wicket of a returning Glenn Maxwell, bowling him with a well-disguised googly.

However, the moment that truly broke Australia’s momentum belonged to the all-rounder Shivam Dube. Introduced as a change of pace, Dube dismissed captain Mitchell Marsh (30) with a slower delivery immediately after the skipper had started looking set, and then followed it up by removing the big-hitting Tim David (14) with a cleverly disguised slower bouncer. Dube’s two wickets for just 15 runs severely hampered the chase.

India’s dominance was completed by Washington Sundar (2/2), who wrapped up the tail with two wickets in two balls, cementing a comprehensive 48-run win. The victory confirms India’s authority in the bilateral T20I series, giving them an unassailable 3-1 lead ahead of the final match. The result serves as a massive confidence booster, highlighting the team’s ability to defend modest totals through tactical bowling and exceptional fielding.
