De Kock Heroics Power South Africa to Series-Levelling Win

Mullanpur, December 11, 2025 – South Africa delivered a statement performance in the second T20 International, defeating India by a commanding 51 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The comprehensive victory levels the five-match series at 1-1, setting up a tantalizing contest for the remaining games. The win was scripted by an explosive innings from veteran opener Quinton de Kock and a relentless display of fast bowling that dismantled the Indian chase.

🇿🇦 South Africa’s Innings: A Platform of Dominance (213/4)

Having lost the toss and being asked to bat first on a pitch that looked tailor-made for high scores, the Proteas openers, Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock, provided an electric start. They put on a brisk 52-run partnership inside the Powerplay, a crucial foundation for the daunting total that followed.

Quinton de Kock’s Masterclass: The innings was anchored by a spectacular knock from Quinton de Kock. He appeared to be batting on a different surface, displaying a breathtaking array of shots against both pace and spin. De Kock brought up his half-century in just 27 balls and continued his assault, combining raw power with surgical precision. His partnership with Captain Aiden Markram (29 off 17) was particularly devastating, adding quick runs and taking the total past the 150-mark.

De Kock looked set for a well-deserved century, but his magnificent innings came to an end on 90 runs off just 46 balls, an unbelievable knock featuring 8 fours and 6 towering sixes, when he was bizarrely run-out. His dismissal did little to slow the momentum, however.

The Finishing Kick: The final overs saw an incredible exhibition of power-hitting from Donavan Ferreira and veteran David Miller. Ferreira (30 off 13) and Miller (20* off 9) unleashed a late-innings blitz, finding the boundary with regularity. Their combined assault in the death overs propelled South Africa past the 200-run mark, setting a formidable target of 214.

India‘s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs, with only the early spell of Jasprit Bumrah providing some control. India’s decision to bowl first, seemingly in anticipation of dew, backfired as the South African top-order made merry.

🇮🇳 India’s Innings: The Chase Collapses (162 All Out)

Chasing 214 was always going to be a monumental task, and India’s response started in the worst possible way. The Proteas pacers, led by an outstanding spell from Ottneil Baartman, were hostile and accurate, reducing the hosts to a precarious 32/3 in the Powerplay.

Top-Order Trouble: Openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill fell quickly, unable to cope with the pace and bounce. Suryakumar Yadav’s brief stay at the crease was also curtailed, leaving the middle-order with an almost impossible required run rate. The relentless pressure from the South African attack, especially in the initial phase, proved decisive.

Tilak Varma’s Fighting Knock: Amidst the ruins, young left-hander Tilak Varma stood out with a brilliant, aggressive half-century. Varma refused to capitulate, hitting 62 off just 34 deliveries, which included 5 fours and 4 sixes. He found a brief partner in Hardik Pandya (15), but once Pandya was dismissed by a sharp catch, the innings lost all semblance of a chase.

A Wicket Flood: After the 10th over, wickets began to tumble with alarming regularity. The required run-rate soared, forcing the Indian batters to take high risks, which the disciplined South African bowlers capitalized on. Lungi Ngidi and Lutho Sipamla chipped in with crucial strikes, but it was the new hero, Ottneil Baartman (4/32), who delivered the final blows. Baartman ran through the lower order, picking up key wickets to seal the victory. India was eventually bowled out for 162 in 19.1 overs, handing South Africa a resounding 51-run win.

South Africa won the second T20 match by 51 runs

This victory was a comprehensive team effort for the Proteas, perfectly executing their batting plan and maintaining discipline with the ball. Quinton de Kock was rightly named the Player of the Match for his game-defining knock. The series is now perfectly poised at 1-1, with the focus shifting to the third T20I where both teams will be fighting for a crucial advantage.
