Team India ended the year 2025 on a glorious note, asserting their absolute dominance over Sri Lanka with a 15-run victory in the fifth and final T20I. With this win, the Women in Blue secured a rare 5-0 clean sweep, proving why they are currently the most clinical outfit in the shortest format of the game.

The Toss and Strategy

Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping to exploit the evening moisture at the Greenfield Stadium. India made significant changes to their playing XI, resting star opener Smriti Mandhana to hand a debut to young G Kamalini. Sneh Rana also returned to the side, replacing Renuka Singh Thakur as India looked to test their bench strength after having already sealed the series 4-0.

First Innings: Harmanpreet’s Masterclass

India’s innings started on a shaky note. Shafali Verma, who had been in red-hot form throughout the series, fell early for just 5 runs. The debutant G Kamalini showed glimpses of talent with 12 runs, but India soon found themselves struggling at a modest score during the powerplay.

However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur walked in with a point to prove. Anchoring the innings with precision, she played a “fighting knock” that shifted the momentum back to the hosts. Harmanpreet smashed 68 runs off just 48 balls, finding gaps with ease and punishing the Sri Lankan spinners.

The highlight of the death overs was the 61-run partnership between Harmanpreet and Amanjot Kaur (22 off 14). After the captain’s departure in the 18th over, Arundhati Reddy provided the final flourish. Reddy’s late-over heroics—which included three fours and a massive six—propelled India to a formidable total of 175/7 in 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Kavisha Dilhari was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with impressive figures of 2/11.

Second Innings: Sri Lanka’s Spirited Chase and the Collapse

Chasing 176, Sri Lanka showed more intent than they had in the previous four matches. Despite losing their talismanic leader Chamari Athapaththu early for just 2 runs, the visitors didn’t back down.

Hasini Perera and Imesha Dulani stitched together a dangerous 68-run stand for the second wicket. Perera was particularly aggressive, scoring a brilliant 58 off 42 balls, while Dulani supported her with a solid 50 off 39 balls. At the 10-over mark, Sri Lanka was well-placed at 75/1, and an upset looked possible.

The turning point came when Amanjot Kaur broke the partnership by dismissing Dulani in the 12th over. This breakthrough opened the floodgates. India’s bowlers, led by the record-breaking Deepti Sharma, began to squeeze the run rate.

Deepti Sharma Scripts History

The match will be remembered for more than just the victory. During the 14th over, Deepti Sharma trapped Nilakshika Silva LBW, claiming her 152nd T20I wicket. In doing so, she surpassed Australia’s Megan Schutt to become the all-time leading wicket-taker in Women’s T20 International history.

Sri Lanka’s middle order crumbled under the mounting pressure of the required run rate. Sree Charani and Sneh Rana kept things tight in the final overs, and despite some late boundaries from Rashmika Sewwandi, Sri Lanka finished at 160/7, falling 15 runs short.

How India Demolished Sri Lanka to Win 5 Consecutive Matches

This 5-0 victory is a testament to India’s depth. Whether it was Shafali Verma’s explosive batting earlier in the series, Smriti Mandhana reaching the 10,000-run milestone in the 4th T20I, or the bowling unit’s discipline, India outclassed Sri Lanka in every department.

As the players celebrate this historic “whitewash,” the focus now shifts to the upcoming home series against New Zealand in 2026. For now, the Men and Women in Blue remain the undisputed queens of the subcontinent.
