De Kock’s Masterclass Floors Pakistan as Proteas Level ODI Series with Dominant Win

Faisalabad, November 6, 2025 – South Africa delivered a statement performance in the 2nd ODI against Pakistan, clinching a comprehensive eight-wicket victory at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Led by a magnificent century from veteran opener Quinton de Kock and a stellar bowling display, the Proteas successfully chased down Pakistan’s target of 270 with a staggering 59 balls to spare, levelling the three-match series at one game apiece.

The result was a stunning reversal of fortunes after the closely fought first ODI, and it showcased the immense firepower of this South African squad, even with several key players absent. The architects of this commanding win were undoubtedly the bowlers, who restricted the host nation to a manageable total, and the top-order batsmen, who made the chase look utterly pedestrian.

🎯 Bowlers Lay the Foundation

Put into bat first, Pakistan’s innings struggled to ever truly ignite. While half-centuries from the middle-order trio of Saim Ayub (53), Salman Ali Agha (69), and Mohammad Nawaz (59) provided much-needed impetus after an early collapse, they couldn’t convert these starts into the massive total a team batting first aims for. The early breakthroughs were crucial, with the Proteas’ quicks and spinners sharing the spoils efficiently.

The standout with the ball was young pacer Nandre Burger, whose controlled aggression and subtle variations saw him bag a career-best four wickets. Spin also played a vital role, with Nqabayomzi Peter continuing his impressive run in the series, chipping in with three crucial dismissals, ensuring the middle and lower order never settled. Pakistan eventually crawled to 269/9 in their allotted 50 overs—a competitive but ultimately insufficient total on a good Faisalabad surface.

🔥 De Kock and De Zorzi Boss the Chase

The target of 270 was always going to demand a solid foundation, and South Africa’s openers, Quinton de Kock and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, provided just that. After Pretorius fell for a brisk 46, it was the partnership between De Kock and Tony de Zorzi that crushed any lingering Pakistani hopes.

De Kock, the former captain and one of the world’s most destructive limited-overs batsmen, was in vintage form. He treated the local bowlers with disdain, peppering the boundary rope with effortless ease. He brought up a splendid hundred, finishing unbeaten on a breathtaking 123 off 119 balls. His experience and clean striking proved invaluable.

Equally impressive was his young partner, Tony de Zorzi, who played the perfect foil. His composed 76 came at a good clip, forming a massive 153-run partnership with De Kock that completely took the game away from Pakistan. The duo’s seamless rotation of strike and timely boundaries defused the spin threat and nullified any chance of a middle-overs wobble.

De Zorzi’s dismissal was a mere footnote, as the remaining runs were knocked off swiftly, culminating in the comfortable eight-wicket win in just the 41st over.

🛣️ Series Perfectly Poised

The dominant victory not only levels the series but also sends a strong message that the visiting South African side is here to compete fiercely. Pakistan will need to regroup quickly and find a way to contain the rampant South African top-order batting, especially Quinton de Kock, ahead of the decider.

For the Proteas, this was a clinical performance—a perfect blueprint for a successful run-chase in sub-continent conditions. The stage is now perfectly set for a thrilling final ODI, with both teams having tasted victory and knowing what it takes to win.
